New York City and the surrounding region host an unparalleled collection of cultural and academic institutions such as Columbia University and the Museum of Modern Art. For the child wishing to spend her summer preparing for college or focusing on a niche academic interest, New York City and Long Island academic summer programs for kids offer a way to bring her education to the next level.

Science

New York City offers the science-oriented student a number of options for spending the summer learning. The Curious Jane group of summer science camps in Brooklyn is an all-girls environment, allowing girls ages 6 to 13 a chance to focus on science and technology. Camp Intrepid, offered through the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, combines physical activity with education in sciences related to space exploration.

Leadership

For some, mere academic training isn't enough. Your child may yearn not to be just another smart kid, but a leader. Leadership camps such as the Mill Basin Day Camp and the Park Slope Day Camp are ideal for such children. Barnard College, the women's institution affiliated with Columbia University also offers such a camp, called Summer in New York City. The camp is highly selective and for students finishing 10th and 11th grades only.

Languages

Foreign languages may be your child's forte. Such camps in New York City include Academie de Paris, China Prep and the Language Day Camp. The last of these camps is for younger children between the ages of 3 and 9. Drisha Summer High School Program offers students the opportunity to study Jewish religious texts in the original language. There is a financial aid program to ensure all interested and motivated students can attend.

History

Few places offer the opportunity to learn about world history that New York City does. Some parts of the aforementioned Camp Intrepid focus on history. The Neighborhood History Camp provides an insight into life in the New York City of the 19th Century. This camp includes two programs, one for children ages 6 to 8 and another for children ages 9 to 12. Children are acquainted with the history of New York City in a hands-on fashion that includes ice cream churning and quill pen journaling.

Long Island Camps

While Long Island doesn't have much in the way of academic camps, there are some options for parents unwilling to send their kids to the Big Apple for the summer. Long Island camps offer the opportunity to learn about the arts, such as music and ballet, or to prepare for college. Hoffstra University offers a summer camp with 20 different focuses, so no matter where your child's interests lie, there is something for him.
