Woodbridge is a great place to live if you're a senior citizen. In 2010, the Woodbridge mayor named May as Senior Month and there are a variety of athletic, entertainment and recreational activities targeting seniors in this popular town in Middlesex County. With a local YMCA, a town community center and a vibrant senior population, there are plenty of activities available to senior citizens in Woodbridge, whether you're looking for something low impact or Olympic-level strenuous.

Senior Olympics

Founded in 1986, the New Jersey Senior Olympics has found a home in Woodbridge. The Senior Olympics offers competitions in 18 sports, from track and field to darts. Athletes compete in their age groups: 75-plus, 65-plus and 50 to 64. In 2009, there were almost 600 competitors coming from all over New Jersey to test their athletic prowess in Woodbridge.

Silver Sneakers

Silver Sneakers is part of the Woodbridge YMCA's programming for active older adults. The Silver Sneakers Fitness Program is free to senior members of the YMCA and provides an exercise routine that is tailored to senior citizens, including muscle strength and cardio programs. Muscular strength training includes resistance training with exercise balls and free weights, while the cardio activities offer chair exercises for stretching and flexibility in addition to aerobics.

SeniorSplash

SeniorSplash is also offered at the YMCA in Woodbridge. It is a water aerobics course catered to seniors. The class, like all senior classes at the YMCA, is available year-round. There are two outdoor pools for YMCA members to use, so even if you are not interested in an aerobics class, you can still do laps from June 12 to Labor Day.

Woodbridge Center Mall Walkers Club

The Woodbridge Center Mall Walkers Club is open to all ages, including senior citizens. The mall opens to walkers at 7 a.m. from Monday through Saturday and at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The entrance near the Applebees is open at this time. The Mall Walkers Club is particularly amenable to seniors because the mall is climate-controlled, leaving you comfortable in the cold of winter and the heat and humidity of summer in New Jersey.

Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dancing is an activity that many seniors would enjoy while staying active. While there aren't classes specifically for seniors, there are adult classes that seniors are welcome to join. Classes take place in the Arenas at Woodbridge and are offered as a six-lesson series.
