Polk County, Florida, lies between Tampa and Orlando, along interstate 4. The county marks the halfway point between the Florida/Georgia state line and southern Florida, according to Polk County's official website. Size
Polk County surpasses the state of Rhode Island in size. However, its 2,010 square miles equal Delaware in terms of land area. Polk's 554 freshwater lakes make up seven percent (135 square miles) of the county and offer several areas for visitors and locals to enjoy activities, such as boating, swimming and fishing. Miles of hiking trails spread out among the area's many parks.
Types
No matter where you are in Polk County, chances are good that you'll find a park to meet your needs. The Lake Blue Boat Park and Ramp offers visitors the opportunity to hike, fish, boat or picnic. Sports, such as baseball and basketball, are available at the Fort Meade and Homeland Heritage Park. Playgrounds are on hand for children at Fort Meade Park, East Central Park (Dundee, Florida) and Banana Lake Park (Lakeland, Florida).
Wildlife
Wildlife viewing is a big draw for travelers planning a visit to the Polk County area. Two major areas to view wildlife are located at Colt Creek State Park and Hampton Tract. Both areas are nestled within the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve. Various wildlife found in Polk County include alligators, bald eagles, white-tale deer, Sherman's fox squirrel, wild turkeys, alligators and bobcats. From January to December 2007, 149 species of birds and 79 species of butterflies were found in Colt Creek State Park, according to the Lake Region Audubon Society.
Considerations
Polk County enjoys mild weather throughout the year. The beginning of summer brings hotter temperatures into the area, along with a high probability of afternoon thunderstorms. Those who plan to visit the county's parks may want to consider doing so during the morning or early evening hours. Winter calls for lightweight jackets because the area can receive chilly weather. Freezes are unlikely; however, they do occur occasionally in Polk County during the winter months.
Camping
Lake Arbuckle Park and Campground, located in the town of Frostproof, contains a camping area and other recreational activities, such as picnicking and boating. Horseback ride, view wildlife and hike at the Mosaic Peace River Park (Homeland/Fort Meade area of Polk County). Activities at the Saddle Creek Park and Campground (Lakeland, Florida) include fishing, baseball, wildlife viewing, boating and hiking. Kids can enjoy the playground located on the park's premises.
