Kids Activities in New Milford, CT

Located in Litchfield County near the New York border, New Milford, Connecticut is a town with a population around 30,000 people according to a 2006 Connecticut census. This town boasts a classic New England small-town feel complete with a bustling main street, juxtaposed with a rural farm setting in some areas. There are many activities in and around the town of New Milford for kids who are residents or simply visiting for the day.

Farming

The New Milford Youth Agency runs programs for kids where they can get to work on a farm. Kids participate in tasks such as making maple syrup, planting and picking pumpkins and pressing their own apple cider. The program takes place at the popular Sullivan Farm located in New Milford. Sullivan Farm also holds several fairs and festivals throughout the year where kids can see live farming demonstrations and pet the animals.

Scouting

New Milford has a very active scouting scene, including Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Kids who enjoy hiking, camping, wildlife and other outdoor activities may find joining a scout trop enjoyable. While enrolled in the program, kids earn badges by accomplishing tasks. Many of these badges are aimed at mastering or understanding skills and traits that will serve them as they grow into adulthood.

Skate Park

New Milford has a state-of-the-art skate park, which is located at Young's Field Sporting Complex. Kids interested in skate boarding and inline skating can perform a host of tricks on the rails, half-pipe and other skate park obstacles. Wearing helmets and the proper padding are required to skate within the park.

Soccer

Each fall the New Milford Parks and Recreation Department has a soccer league for boys and girls. The ages range from as young as four all the way through sixth grade. For those youth soccer players who are exceptionally passionate and talented, there are also travel soccer teams in the area consisting of the elite players from towns around the state.

Seasonal Clubs

There are seasonal clubs that kids can participate in, such as the New Milford Swimming and Tennis Club, which is open each year from late May through Labor Day weekend. For a fee, kids can take both swimming and tennis lessons, attend the summer camps they have to offer, or use the facilities recreationally at their convenience.
