You can probably locate any type of fitness club in New York State, especially within New York City. Manhattan consists of upscale full-service facilities, spas and well-known chain facilities. Most likely, you will see fitness centers every few blocks as you walk through the city. If you are traveling to Upstate New York, fitness clubs are not that close together, but you have an option of resort-like accommodations, specialized clubs and plenty of chain organizations.

For Women Only

Many women prefer to exercise in peace without the stares of men. Therefore, some women opt for a fitness facility that caters to women only. Lucille Roberts offers 34 locations throughout New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland Counties. A membership allows you to access the weight loss programs and plenty of weekly classes, including belly dancing, kickboxing and a mega mix workout, which combines strength training, kickboxing, aerobics, jump roping and stepping in one class.
Another women’s only fitness club, Curves, offers 191 locations in New York including upstate, New York City and Long Island, as of September 2010. At each location you can “burn up to 500 calories with a complete cardio and strength-training workout in just 30 minutes, every time you visit," boasts the Curves Web site.

Spa Fitness Club

Many fitness buffs enjoy the combination of a regular exercise regimen and a relaxing spa treatment at the same location. You can exercise and relax at one of the six Exhale MindBodySpa locations in New York City or in Bridgehampton. The co-ed facility works with the Core Fusion toning class, which combines Pilates and a variety of exercise techniques with the Lotte Berk method. Schedule a massage, facial or waxing in the spa after your workout.

Luxury Clubs

Boom Fitness is a luxury sports club facility with locations on the Upper East Side and Murray Hill sections of Manhattan. Work out on the treadmills, free weights, lifecycles and ellipticals by Precor. Classes include Tai Chi, indoor cycling and kickboxing. The facility has leather furnishings, hardwood flooring and floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Grab a health snack, protein bar or smoothie in the on-site juice bar.

The Manhattan and Great Neck Equinox offers an extensive swim program from a water workout, aqua boot camp and swim for fitness class. The only two locations that offer outdoor training classes are the Manhattan Columbus Circle and Great Neck. All locations provide cardio and strength training exercise equipment. Most locations offer Pilates and yoga.
