S-adenosylmethionine, more commonly known as adenosyl or SAM-e, is a naturally-occurring body chemical that is taken as a supplement, according to ObGyn.net. Drugs.com notes that adenosyl can be used to treat a number of physical and mental ailments, including liver dysfunction, arthritis pain and depression. Though adenosyl is a naturally-occurring substance, those taking it for therapeutic uses may experience side effects. A doctor should be consulted before using this supplement.

Upset Stomach

According to Drugs.com, stomach issues are one of the most commonly reported side effects of taking supplements that include adenosyl. While ObGyn.net references general upset stomach as a side effect, Drugs.com notes that the symptom of upset stomach is most often experienced as nausea.

Bowel Problems

Reporting on side effects of adenosyl, ObGyn.net notes that gastrointestinal problems are well-documented in formal studies. Drugs.com reports that these gastrointestinal side effects can include diarrhea, constipation or both.

Dizziness

Some individuals taking adenosyl supplements have reported experiencing dizziness. Drugs.com notes that this is one of the more commonly recorded adverse reactions to the supplements.

Mild Insomnia

Adenosyl can have metabolic effects on the body. For some individuals, this means that taking adenosyl will result in mild insomnia, according to Drugs.com. It is considered to be a common but not serious side effect.

Increased Risk of Heart Disease

Taking adenosyl supplements regularly may lead to an increased risk of developing heart disease, according to ObGyn.net. The site notes that this is because adenosyl is naturally converted into the amino acid homocysteine in the body. As high levels of homocysteine correlate with increased risk of heart disease, taking adenosyl may result in the side effects of elevated homocysteine levels and later heart problems, according to ObGyn.net. Vitamin B supplements can counteract this side effect.

Anxiety and Mania

According to Drugs.com's review of the complete side effects of adenosyl in clinical practice, individuals with bipolar disorder experience specific side effects from taking the medication. They show increased levels of anxiety and mania, side effects which may not necessarily occur in patients without these pre-existing conditions. Those with bipolar issues are cautioned to avoid adenosyl or supplements with SAM-e compounds as an ingredient.
