As your pregnancy progresses, you may find that your backaches are increasing. Rather than turn to pain medication, which isn't always appropriate at the final stages of pregnancy, you can wear a maternity belt. This belt goes under the belly to support the weight of your pregnancy, which can significantly reduce the stress to your back. There are several styles of maternity belt, each of which provides a different level of support.
Step 1
Position the elastic strap behind your back if the belt is a simple, under-the-belly style. Then wrap the supports under your belly. Use the Velcro to adjust the support to the level you need. This type of belt offers the highest level of support, but can be visible under clothing.
Step 2
Step into the belt if it's a support that resembles a tube top. Adjust it so that it sits comfortably on your back and doesn't ride up your belly as you move. This type of belt provides a smooth line under clothing.
Step 3
Sit down if your belt is combined with underpants. Since you likely can't see your feet, you don't want to trip while putting each foot through. Pull it up and adjust it so that the belly support isn't pulled too high in the front.
Step 4
Pull the belt on over your head if it's a camisole-type support. Usually used in early pregnancy, this type of support mimics an undershirt and provides light support. It's particularly useful if your developing belly is sensitive to rubbing from fabric or your waistband.
