According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a series of microdermabrasion treatments can address blotchy or uneven skin tones. A professional microdermabrasion procedure uses a special wand that shoots aluminum oxide crystals at the surface of the skin. This sandblasting effect removes the stratum corneum--the layer of dull skin cells that covers the epidermis. The skin reacts to the treatment by speeding up cell production to replace the lost cells. This results in newer, healthier cells quickly reaching the skin's surface and a more vibrant and even skin tone. The non-invasive, skin rejuvenation treatment requires no downtime, generates few side effects and can performed during your lunch break.

Step 1

Consult with your dermatologist regarding the side effects and contraindications associated with microdermabrasion. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you tell your doctor if you scar easily, if you have a keloid scar or if you've had other cosmetic procedures in the past. Also, let your doctor know if you've ever taken Accutane, as this could increase the likelihood of adverse effects. Some people do experience mild side effects, such as redness or swelling, which should subside within 24 hours.

People with extensive hyperpigmentation, sensitive skin, sunburned skin or severe acne scars should not undergo microdermabrasion. (1, 3)

Step 2

Budget for a series of treatments. The American Academy of Dermatology asserts that between five and 16 treatments, scheduled every one to two weeks, are necessary for optimal results. As of 2010, the cost for professional sessions ranged between $75 and $150 per treatment.

Step 3

Avoid sun exposure and stop using skin exfoliating products, such as topical retinoids, for several days before your procedure. These measures will reduce the likelihood of adverse effects.

Step 4

Undergo the microdermabrasion procedure. The treatment takes place in your dermatologist's office and can last from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the area treated. Remove your contact lenses if you wear them, and place the protective eyewear that you will be given over your eyes. You will not be able to feel the microdermabrasion tool scraping your skin--it is not painful and anesthesia is not necessary.

Step 5

Protect your skin from excess sun exposure between treatments. Microdermabrasion treatments will increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, so apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and wear protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat, while outdoors.
