Dealing with acne sores on your face or body can be distressing. It's tempting to pick or squeeze at your blemishes, but doing so will only make them worse. To really treat acne sores and pimples, you need to adopt a comprehensive strategy to attack your acne from all fronts. Treatment may involve over-the-counter products, but it may also include prescription medications and procedures. It ultimately depends on how severe your acne is and what your skin responds to the best.

Step 1

Use a mild medicated cleanser. You can find this over the counter at most drugstores. Look for brands that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, as these help to unclog pores, absorb oil and kill acne-causing bacteria. Wet your face with warm water then work the cleanser into a lather on your skin. Rinse well with warm water before splashing your face with cold water to tighten and close the pores.

Step 2

Apply an oil-free moisturizer. A small amount will do to lock in moisture and prevent flaking, peeling and redness that may be caused by using an acne cleanser. Concentrate on areas that are notoriously dry or that you notice developing irritation like the sides of the nose, the cheeks and forehead.

Step 3

Use oil-free products, only. Apply makeup and hair products sparingly and when you do, ensure they list that they are oil-free or non-comedogenic on the packaging, which means they won't clog pores. This will prevent new acne sores from forming.

Step 4

Wear sunscreen when going outside. Apply a brand that is oil-free and that is at least SPF 30. Be sure to thoroughly cover your face, arms and any other part of you that will be exposed to the sun.

Step 5

Visit a dermatologist if your efforts do not work. If after six to eight weeks the over-the-counter acne treatment doesn't cause improvement, a dermatologist may be able to prescribe a cream or oral medication that better addresses the problem and effectively manages your acne sores.

Things You'll Need

  • Benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid cleanser
  • Oil-free moisturizer
  • Oil-free makeup and hair products
