Stress and nervousness are physical and emotional responses to real, perceived or potential events. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, some stress is a normal part of a healthy life--it can help you become more productive and motivated. However, chronic stress can can be both emotionally and physically destructive. Some nutritionists believe that certain vitamins can help you manage stress and nervousness.
Check with your physician before adding vitamins to your diet to combat stress and nervousness. Vitamins should not replace medical or psychological treatment.
Vitamin C
According to Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," vitamin C is essential for the proper functioning of the adrenal glands, including those that produce anti-stress chemicals. Chronic stress and nervousness may deplete these glands, preventing them from releasing these chemicals into the bloodstream. Vitamin C is available in supplement form, and can also be derived from food sources such as citrus fruits, alfalfa, red clover, berries, sweet peppers and dark green, leafy vegetables. Dr. Balch recommends 3,000 IU daily to manage the effects of nervousness and stress. However, you should check with your doctor before taking doses this high.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 helps support a healthy nervous system, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Deficiencies of this vitamin may worsen the symptoms of stress and nervousness. Vitamin B12 is found mainly in animal sources, such as milk, cheese, eggs, meats and fish. It is also included in most B-complex vitamin supplements. In extreme cases, your doctor may want to administer this vitamin via injection. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends a daily dose of 2.4mcg per day.
Vitamin E
According to Dr. Balch, vitamin E may help prevent the physical effects of stress and nervousness. Stress depletes the body's energy and causes the brain to release cortisol and other hormones that can damage the body. As a result, people who experience chronic nervousness or stress often have weak immune systems.
Vitamin E may boost the immune system, helping to prevent illnesses. It is also considered an antioxidant that can help prevent cellular damage. This vitamin is available in supplements, whole grain breads, cold-pressed olive oil and eggs. People with chronic stress should take 400 IU of vitamin E every day, according to Dr. Balch.
