If you have attention-deficit disorder (ADD), you may need help with organization. A well-organized backpack, folders and other school essentials can help you keep track of your assignments, books and supplies. While independence is essential, some guidance may help you devise systems that allow for school success and prevent frustration.
Purge and Sort
If your backpack is a mess, empty it on the kitchen table or floor. Throw away trash and separate items into general categories. Place all grooming items together and sort notes, books and papers by class. Decide what you need in your backpack, what can stay at home, and what can remain in your locker. Ask mom, dad or a teacher for guidance if you're not sure what you should carry.
Personal Items
Some backpacks have multiple pockets and sections, while others do not. Invest in clear pencil pouches to organize personal items in your backpack. Gather all of your grooming items, like a brush, deodorant or personal items into a small zippered bag or a pocket on your bag. Sort electronics, like your phone or MP3 player, into a pocket or separate pouch. If you will be carrying a water bottle or lunch in your backpack, designate space for these.
School Notes and Handouts
Finding a system to handle paper is a critical part of organizing a backpack. Designate one or two 1 to 1 1/2 inch binders for your notes. Use tabbed pocket dividers to hold class handouts, assigning dividers for each subject. Include enough lined paper or graph paper, depending upon the class, for a full week of notes. Pair this system with an accordion file at home. Each week, organize your class notes and handouts into the accordion file or file box at home. Have a friend or parent keep you accountable to avoid papers piling up and becoming overwhelming.
Daily Tasks
Before you leave school each day, think about what you need to bring home, whether that's your dirty gym clothes or your science book. Carry home books needed for that night's homework, but leave other textbooks in your locker. You may find that you can keep your backpack in better order if you leave grooming supplies, additional binders and other supplies in your locker, rather than carrying them home daily.
