While most cases of acne are generally mild and can be treated with over-the-counter products, sometimes the blemishes worsen beyond the help of standard treatments. Lesions called nodules and cysts become inflamed, red, sore and may scar. In order to treat deep acne, you'll need to enact a comprehensive skin care plan and be willing to be aggressive to get rid of these lesions for good.

Step 1

Make an appointment with a dermatologist to discuss your options. The severity of your acne, your skin's sensitivity and your budget will play large roles in which acne treatments you can ultimately pursue.

Step 2

Apply prescription creams or take prescription medications. Antibiotics may be applied topically or taken orally depending on the breadth of treatment your dermatologist feels is best. Isotretinoin may be taken orally for several weeks to cure your acne. This drug dries out excess oil and may leave your skin permanently drier.

Step 3

Undergo acne removal surgery. For deep lesions, your dermatologist will likely drain large cysts of their material, then inject it with a mild corticosteroid to heal the acne from the inside out, according to AcneNet.

Step 4

Follow strict skin care guidelines by washing your face with a mild cleanser each morning and evening. Use your fingertips to massage the cleansers onto dampened skin. Rinse well with warm water. Don't scrub your skin, as this will irritate your deep acne. Follow with any topical acne treatments you've been prescribed, then an oil-free moisturizer. Finally, apply an oil-free sunscreen to prevent sun damage that could worsen your acne.

Things You'll Need

  • Prescription acne medications
  • Mild cleanser
  • Oil-free moisturizer
  • Oil-free sunscreen
