Chemical poisoning occurs when a toxic substance comes into contact with the body and causes an adverse reaction. The substance can be swallowed or inhaled. Also, chemical poisoning can result when the substance comes into contact with the eyes, skin or mucous membranes. Knowing the signs and symptoms of chemical poisoning can assist with the rapid treatment of the poisoning. However, the Mayo Clinic notes that many of the symptoms of poisoning resemble the symptoms of other conditions, including seizures and stroke. Contact a poison control center if chemical poisoning is suspected.
Symptoms of Mild Poisoning
Mild chemical poisoning can result in headaches and soreness in joints. There can be nausea, fatigue, diarrhea and irritation of the eyes and skin. Loss of appetite and weight loss are two other symptoms of mild poisoning. Perspiration can be a symptom, as well as restlessness. A general sense of weakness can also result from a case of mild chemical poisoning.
Symptoms of Moderate Poisoning
Stomach cramps and severe diarrhea are symptoms of moderate chemical poisoning. Muscles can twitch, and there can be a loss of muscle coordination. As with mild poisoning, there can be irritation of the eyes and skin. Blurred vision can be a symptom, as can excessive saliva. Excessive perspiration is a symptom. Other moderate poisoning symptoms include soreness in joints, moodiness and trembling. There can be difficulty with breathing and a rapid pulse. Skin can appear flush or yellowed.
Symptoms of Severe Poisoning
In cases of severe poisoning, there can be the symptom of intense thirst. The rate of breathing can increase. There can be uncontrollable muscle twitches, and pupils can become much smaller, the size of pinpoints. Unconsciousness and an inability to breathe can result.
Other Symptoms
The Mayo Clinic says there can be redness and burns around the mouth. The redness and burns can result from drinking some kinds of poisons. Another symptom can be breath that smells like chemicals, such as paint thinner or gasoline. Sleepiness and vomiting are other symptoms.
