Scarring is a natural part of the healing process that occurs when collagen builds up under the skin after an injury, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Many scars fade and become less noticeable in time, but in some cases, especially when an injury is severe, scars may not heal well and can permanently alter the appearance of your skin. Scars on your face can be particularly noticeable, but you can often take precautions to prevent them.
Step 1
Wear a helmet and any other necessary protective gear when you play sports, ride bikes, skateboard or participate in other physical activities that could result in a facial injury. The best way to prevent a scar is to prevent an injury that could lead to scarring.
Step 2
Try an over-the-counter treatment if you have mild acne, and talk to a doctor about treatment options if you have severe acne. Acne, especially severe cases, is a common cause of facial scarring.
Step 3
Avoid scratching, squeezing or picking at any lesions that develop on your face. Pimples and other blemishes are more likely to leave permanent scars if you irritate them.
Step 4
Treat facial injuries promptly and correctly. For burns, apply a cold compress to the area for five minutes, and then cover the injury with a bandage, recommends the National Institutes of Health. For cuts and scrapes, clean the wound, apply antibiotic ointment and cover the area with a bandage. Continue to keep the injury moist and covered for a week.
Step 5
Apply pressure to an injury to prevent collagen from bonding to form a scar. Over-the-counter pads designed to place pressure on a wound and prevent scarring are available, or you can periodically massage the area with lotion to help break up the collagen.
Tips and Warnings
- Sun exposure can make a scar more noticeable, especially when it is new. To protect your skin and minimize the appearance of scars, wear sunscreen when you are outdoors. If you do develop a scar, a dermatologist might be able to correct it through laser therapy or other treatments.
- Although they are popular for treating injuries, hydrogen peroxide and vitamin E may actually increase the risk of scarring. Avoid using these products to treat an injury.
