Bunk beds are one of the most popular ways to maximize space in an otherwise small room. Bunk beds consist of two beds stacked, which free up the rest of a bedroom for other furniture. Bunk beds are made in a variety of styles. Their frame is either wood or metal. There are bunk beds that feature twin over full-size beds or a twin over a futon style bed. There are even bunk beds with only one bed on top, leaving the space underneath free for additional furniture or storage. Loft beds typically have a ladder either on the side or at one end so that children or adults can climb up safely. A small nightlight can help children find the ladder easier in the dark.
What to Look for
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of six not sleep on the top bunk of a loft bed. Instead, place older children or teenagers on the top bunk, leaving the bottom one free for smaller children. Some beds also have a third bed option, popularly known as a trundle bed. This bed can be easily stored away and brought out for sleepovers or extra company. Other beds may have built-in storage drawers underneath the bottom bunk. This option would free up additional space in the room usually reserved for other furniture. Older children may enjoy a bunk bed that is fitted with a desk underneath to maximize space in the room.
Common Pitfalls
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (www.cpsc.gov) tracks recall information on bunk beds and periodically issues alerts on ones that are unsafe. Before shopping, visit the CPSC website to be certain that the store is not carrying furniture that has been recalled. Even though recalled beds should be returned to the store, some recall information may be slow to reach individual retailers.
Examine the bunk bed before purchase to determine that it meets safety standards. Guardrails on the sides should not have the potential to trap a child. In addition, the frame of the bed should be sturdy enough to support the weight of both people who will be sleeping on it. Since some bunk beds will fit an extra-long mattress, be sure to purchase the correct mattress for the bed to avoid a potential safety issue.
