Removing a lip ring for the first time can be a little tricky. The ball that rests on the outer portion of the lip ring, known as the captive bead, secures the two open ends of the lip ring. Without the captive bead, the lip ring would simply fall out of the piercing hole, requiring constant replacement. A pair of pliers, specially designed for the job, expand the lip ring jewelry and release the ball. Once you get the hang of using the pliers, removing your lip ring to change jewelry will feel like second nature.
Step 1
Wash your hands thoroughly to disinfect them prior to taking the ball off of your lip ring. Washing with warm water and antibacterial soap will help remove germs and bacteria from your hands that can easily transfer to your lip piercing.
Step 2
Grip the portion of the lip ring that rests against the inside of your lip with the thumb and forefinger of one hand. Hold the ring opening pliers in the other hand. Insert the closed tips into the middle of the lip ring.
Step 3
Release the handle of the pliers slowly, to open the tips. As the pliers open, the ring will expand. When this happens, the captive bead will fall off.
Step 4
Place the ball in a cup or bowl while you remove the rest of the jewelry. Remove the lip ring by carefully pulling the jewelry up and out of the piercing hole.
Step 5
Reattach the ball to the lip ring. Store the lip ring in your jewelry box or plastic baggie for safekeeping. Replace your lip jewelry right away to prevent the hole from closing.
Tips and Warnings
- Wearing a pair of clean rubber or latex gloves can help give you a better grip on the ball of the lip ring.
- If you are removing your lip ring for the first time, do not do so before the recommended time. According to the Center for Young Women's Health, healing time for a lip piercing is between two and three months. Removing your jewelry before this can result in serious infection. If the piercing site is sore, red, inflamed or oozing green or yellow pus, do not remove the lip piercing. If the symptoms continue, see your doctor. Do not tug or pull on the lip ring as you open it with the pliers. Doing so can cause injury to your lip.
