Liver spots are dark skin blemishes that commonly form on the skin of older people, according to MayoClinic.com. Also known as age spots, or solar lentigines, they are usually caused by years of sun exposure though aging and genetics may also play a role. They are not serious and do not require medical treatment. But they can sometimes be confused with skin cancer, which can be dangerous.
Appearance
Liver spots are sharply defined round areas of dark skin that usually occur in people with light skin but can also be seen in those with darker complexions, according to MayoClinic.com. They lie flat on the skin like a freckle. Liver spots are usually brown, black or gray and can be as small as a freckle or as big as a centimeter wide. They can sometimes group together, making them more noticeable.
Location
Because liver spots are caused by long-term sun exposure, they tend to grow on areas of the body that get the most sun, according to MayoClinic.com. This includes the face, the backs of the hands and the tops of the feet. They can also sometimes be found on the shoulders and upper back.
When To Call the Doctor
True liver spots do not lead to cancer but some skin cancers can start off looking like a liver spot. If a spot darkens over time or changes appearance, that can be a sign of skin cancer and should be checked by a physician, according to MayoClinic.com. Other warning signs of skin cancer include a spot that is growing fast or begins to rise up off the skin, has an irregular shape or border, or has an unusual combination of colors.
