Blood type O is the universal blood type with 40 percent of the population possessing it, according to the American Red Cross. According to Dr. Peter D'Adamo, a naturopathic physician, your blood type holds secrets to your biochemical uniqueness. Blood type O positive diet foods can help you live a healthier, longer life with a lessened susceptibility to many health ailments. O positive types need to eat each meal slowly while sitting down.
Dark, Green Vegetables
A variety of dark green vegetables can be included as diet foods, according to D'Adamo and Michael Lam, M.D. Dark green vegetables contain large amounts of vitamin K. Vitamin K can help improve your blood's clotting capabilities, which typically lacks in O blood types. Kelp and bladder wrack, two seaweeds, are excellent nutrients for this blood type. Both can help regulate the thyroid gland's functioning. Bladder wrack also helps normalize slowly functioning, or sluggish, metabolic rates, according to D'Adamo. Dark green vegetables include kale, romaine lettuce, chicory, beet leaves, artichokes, okra, parsley, leeks, dandelion greens, horseradish, broccoli, spinach and collard greens, according to Lam. Other greens include Swiss chard, turnips, kohlrabi, beet leaves and escarole, according to the Natural Health Place. Pure juices from these vegetables can be included in your diet. These vegetables supply rich amounts of needed vitamins A, E, K and B complexes.
Saltwater Fish
Blood type O positives do well eating a variety of lean animal proteins such as cold water fish, according to D'Adamo. Type O positives have a tendency to be iodine deficient, iodine being the most essential nutrient needed for proper thyroid functioning. Poor thyroid functioning can lead to fatigue, fluid retention and weight gain. Improve your thyroid functioning by eating a variety of cold water fish, according to Lam. Cold water fish, or saltwater fish, can help replenish your iodine level. Cod, herring (other than pickled varieties) and mackerel will be most beneficial. Other saltwater fish include salmon (other than smoked or cured varieties), halibut, bluefish, pike, rainbow trout, hake, shad, sole, red snapper, sardine, striped bass, sturgeon, white perch, tilefish, swordfish, whitefish, yellowtail, squid and yellow perch, according to the Natural Health Place. Canned, raw or freshly cooked varieties will be equally beneficial.
Whole Grains
Even though type O positives do not get along with high gluten-containing wheat products, certain whole grains will be beneficial to this blood type. Acceptable whole grains include amaranth, rye, spelt, barley, kasha, quinoa and millet. Varieties of rice can be eaten. Rice varieties include brown, white, wild, long grain and basmati, according to Natural Health Place and Lam. Products made from these grains including pastas, breads, crackers and baked items provide acceptable food sources. Eating 1-cup servings of dry cereal three to four times weekly is recommended. Acceptable whole grain cereal products include puffed millet, puffed rice, cream of rice, rice bran and spelt.
