The stride length of an elliptical is the distance from the toe of the front pedal to the heel of the back pedal. For an elliptical with the flywheel in the back, you need to subtract 2 inches from your measurement to get the true stride length. A 20-inch stride length is standard in gym equipment, but you can purchase ellipticals with other stride lengths or ellipticals that have adjustable stride lengths.
Step 1
Select a stride length under 18 inches if you are 5 feet, 3 inches or shorter. Select a stride length from 18 to 20 inches if you are 5 feet, 4 inches to 5 feet, 8 inches. If you are 5 feet, 9 inches or taller, select a 20- or 21-inch stride length.
Step 2
Target your thighs and calves by selecting a shorter stride length.
Step 3
Target your glutes and hamstrings with longer strides, 18 inches and higher.
