Shooting the ball is the most fundamental aspect of the game of basketball because without it, there would be no scoring in the game. Being able to shoot the ball well on a regular basis can make a player difficult to guard and a team hard to beat. Learning how to shoot a field goal should be one of the first fundamentals a player learns when starting out in the game.

Step 1

Ask a friend or teammate to help you practice shooting by passing the ball to you as you set up for your shot. Pick a spot on the floor from which to practice your shot.

Step 2

Start about a pace behind your designated spot. Take a step toward the spot with one foot and have your partner pass the ball to you. As you catch the ball, bring your other foot in line so your feet are parallel and about shoulder-width apart.

Step 3

Set your feet so they are facing the basket. Bend your knees and gather in the ball with both hands. Set your shooting hand under the ball, holding it with your fingertips and put your nonshooting hand on the side of the ball.

Step 4

Jump as high as you can. Bend your arm so your shooting arm is perpendicular to the ground and the ball is pointed at the basket.

Step 5

Push the ball toward the basket with your shooting arm when you reach the apex of your jump. Keep the ball loosely in the fingertips of your shooting hand and support the ball with your nonshooting hand on the side of the ball.

Step 6

Release the ball by pulling your nonshooting hand away from the ball and pushing the ball toward the basket with your fingertips. Flick your wrist to create a backspin on the ball.

Tips and Warnings

  • Practice shooting from all spots on the floor, including close range, outside the three-point line and midrange jumpers.
