Often diabetics are required to monitor their blood glucose levels. The options that are available for blood glucose monitors may seem overwhelming. A person with diabetes needs a monitor that is easy to use, reliable and accurate. The website, Viewpoints, has reviewed 20 items needed by diabetics, and the top five products are blood glucose monitors.

OneTouch Ultra 2 Blood Glucose Meter

The OneTouch Ultra 2 allows a person to test his blood glucose level in five seconds. According to OneTouch Diabetes, this meter calculates blood glucose averages for seven, 14 and 30 days. This meter also averages blood glucose levels before and after meals. The OneTouch Ultra 2 has a back light so the person can test and read the results at night. This meter also allows the person to see how foods and portion size affect his blood glucose levels. The OneTouch Ultra 2 has a port to download results; the results may then be printed out and taken to the doctor.

Bayer Contour Blood Glucose Monitoring System

The Bayer Contour Blood Glucose Monitoring System allows a person to check his blood in five seconds, and it does not require coding the monitor before beginning. According to Bayer Diabetes Care, this system runs on two settings. The first is the most basic; the user pricks his finger and inserts the test strip and waits for results. The second setting allows the person to customize the monitor to his needs. The individual's blood glucose highs and lows, pre- and post-meal markers, and a post-meal reminder can be programmed. This monitor calculates averages for seven, 14 and 30 days. All results can be downloaded to the Bayer Diabetes Management Software.

TRUEtrack Smart System Diabetes Meter Kit

TRUEtrack Smart System allows a person to check his blood glucose in 10 seconds. The test strip is inserted into the meter; the side of the finger is pricked using the lancet; and then the user holds the test strip to the drop of blood. The meter will count down from 10 seconds and give results. According to Nipro Diagnostics, this meter only requires one microliter of blood. To ensure accurate results, the user should always wash and dry hands thoroughly before testing and check the expiration date on the package of test strips. The TRUEtrack System comes with a lifetime warranty.
