How to Make Natural Toothpaste

Making your own toothpaste can be not only fun and chemical free; it can also save you money. In fact, you can make a year supply of toothpaste for a family of four for less than $10. The toothpaste might not have the fun colors and flavors, but it can be a healthy and affordable alternative to commercial toothpaste, and you can have choices on flavors. Most of the items you need can be purchased quite easily.

How to Make Natural Toothpaste

Step 1

Pour 6 tsp. of baking soda in a small, clean container that has a lid and is easy to store. Baking soda neutralizes odors and works effectively as a tooth-whitening agent.

Step 2

Add 1/3 tsp. of sea salt to the bowl. Salt is abrasive and adds flavor to the toothpaste. The abrasive salt can help act as tiny scrubbers to help clean teeth. Sea salt is best because it is less processed and has no added iodine. Salt is very good for your teeth and gums because it is an astringent and helps stop bacteria. Salt also acts as a cleaning agent.

Step 3

Combine 4 tsp. of glycerin with the dry ingredients, and mix until it forms a paste. Glycerin helps add consistency to homemade toothpaste and acts a natural sweetener. It also helps prevent the toothpaste from drying out.

Step 4

Use an essential oil to add a flavor of your choice. Mix 10 to 12 drops of peppermint, cinnamon, clove, orange, or whatever flavor you decide upon into your paste. Some essential oils can serve medicinal purposes and help kill bacteria and germs. Tea tree, geranium and lemon can help with gingivitis. Clove, peppermint, wintergreen and cinnamon oil helps freshen breathe and can aid in killing germs.

Tips and Warnings

  • Some sea salts can be course, so buy the fine salt at your local grocer. Check your local health food store for fair prices on essential oils. Glycerin can be purchased at your local pharmacy for about five dollars for a small bottle. Keep the container lid on tight, and store in a safe and dry place.
  • If you have dental problems and are prone to cavities, consult your dentist. Homemade toothpaste does not contain fluoride, which can make teeth resistant to decay.
