If you live in an area where natural emergencies like tornadoes or floods are common, it might be wise to put together an emergency kit. According to FEMA's Ready America website, an emergency preparedness kit should contain water, a battery-powered radio, first aid kit, flashlight and a cell phone with a charger. Water is especially important. You should have enough for at least three days. One gallon per person per day is ideal.

Canned Foods

Choose a variety of canned foods to get the most of them nutritionally. Canned fruits and vegetables will provide you with nutrients and, in case you run out of water, additional liquid to drink. Canned meats and ready-to-eat foods such as canned pasta or soups are another option. Choose things that don't need to be cooked, as you might not have access to a heating source. Canned juices can be a good addition to water and will also provide nutrition. Peanut butter is high in proteins and fat and good for sustenance. Non-perishable pasteurized milk or canned condensed milk are also a source of calories and energy. Don't forget a can opener.

Packaged Snacks

Aside from canned foods, packaged products are your best choice for emergency foods. Crackers, dry cereal, protein bars and dry fruits and nuts all contain a high amount of carbs, which help you maintain energy. Avoid foods that are high in sodium, such as chips and pretzels. Salt makes you thirsty, so it will increase your consumption of water, not a good idea if your supply of water is limited.

Comfort Foods

Adding a few comfort foods to the kit might help you deal with the stress of the situation. According to the American Public Health Association, good options include hard candy, chocolate bars and cookies. Not only are these comforting to have around, but they are also high in sugar, which can provide a quick burst of energy when needed.

Special Foods

If you have babies or very young children, pack food for them too, including individual milk boxes. People with special dietary needs should stock up on foods that are safe for them to eat. Add plenty of pet food as well.
