Lewisville Lake, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, covers approximately 23,280 acres and has 233 miles of shoreline. The lake is located in the Denton County city of Lewisville, minutes north of Dallas, Texas. You can enjoy a wide range of outdoor recreational activities at Lewisville Lake, including tent camping at both improved and primitive sites around the lake.

Tent Campgrounds

Two campgrounds for tent camping are available for you to choose from at Lewisville Lake. Lake Park Campground, operated by the City of Lewisville, has 106 improved campsites. The Corps of Engineers operates Hickory Creek Park, where there are 124 improved sites available. If you're longing for a more basic experience, Hickory Creek also has ten primitive tent camping sites with water and pit toilet facilities within walking distance. Both campgrounds have bathrooms, warm-water showers and electric and water hookups available on the improved sites. Lake Park offers free Wi-Fi Internet service and a coin-operated laundry facility. Hickory Park amenities include a playground, fire rings and picnic tables.

Tent Site Fees

As of 2010, site fees at both Lake Park Campground and Hickory Creek Park were $16 per night for improved tent camping sites with electric and water hookups. Lake Park offers discounted fees for seniors. The rates as of 2010 at Hickory Creek for the primitive sites were $10 per night.

Boating

If you plan to bring a boat to Lewisville Lake for fishing, water skiing or pleasure boating, Hickory Creek Park has a dedicated boat ramp for the exclusive use of those staying in the park. There are fee-based boat ramps available around the lake that can be used by those staying at the other campground. Rental boats are also available at the four marinas located on the lake. The marinas also sell fuel and boating supplies.

Fishing

If you enjoy fishing, Lewisville Lake is known for several bass fish species, crappie and two species of catfish. Largemouth bass, white crappie and white bass are the most frequently taken fish. Bait, tackle, fishing licenses and permits are available at any of the marinas. Hickory Creek Park offers shoreline access for fishing and other shoreline fishing locations are plentiful around the lake if you don't have a boat available.

Hiking and Nature Trails

Four walking trails that vary in length from 0.3 miles to 2.1 miles are available at the 2,000-acre Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA). The trails traverse a variety of habitats in keeping with the purpose of the area, which is the restoration and preservation of the native ecosystems. Try the kayak paddling trail along Elm Fork of the Trinity River. You'll find diverse wildlife and birds in abundance at LLELA.

Camping Season

Lake Lewisville campgrounds are open year-round but, given the humid, subtropical climate of north central Texas, the heat during the summer months is often intense. Temperatures in July and August routinely climb in the nineties or above and high humidity makes it feel even hotter. Winters are typically mild and dry but spring and fall are the best seasons to enjoy a comfortable tent camping experience at Lake Lewisville.
