East Texas, like everything in the state, is large; there are many areas to visit and child-friendly activities within each interesting location. Visit child-friendly museums, wildlife reserves, farms, wetlands and beautiful lake areas. Go camping, or stay in town and find fun things to do there. Finding the right East Texas attraction is a matter of analyzing your family's likes and dislikes.
Tyler
Visit Tyler, Texas, which is known as America's rose capital because of its proliferation of roses. There are many fun-filled activities for kids in Tyler. At Brookshire's World of Wildlife Museum and Country Store, children can learn about and see more than 450 mounted wildlife species and a replica 1920s grocery store. Other family attractions in Tyler include the Caldwell Zoo, Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari Park, Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge and Moore Farms, a working farm with hay rides, pumpkin picking and other outdoor activities. If none of these activities appeals to your family's discerning tastes, a visit to one of the city's water parks like Splash Kingdom or the Waterpark at the Villages is bound to be an interesting adventure.
Orange
Take the kids on an incredible air boat ride and show them the protected wetlands of the Sabine River in southeast Texas. Kids will get to see alligators, cranes, turtles, lily pads and lots of cypress trees on their trip through the swamp. Some tour guides even offer night tours for the brave. Take your camera and get a personal view of Texas wildlife.
Port Arthur
Visit the Texas coast when you go to Port Arthur. Take in attractions like Pleasure Island Park, a man-made island with beautiful hills and bluffs. Families can participate in fishing, boating, water sports and outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, bird watching and biking. Areas within the park provide additional children's activities like volleyball, basketball and picnic areas.
Beaumont, Texas
Kids of all ages participate in a variety of different activities in Beaumont, Texas. Take them to Gator Country Adventure Park to see all the scaly alligators. Kids even get to hold a baby alligator. Play laser tag at Fun City, or enjoy a night on the town at the Crossroads Bowling Center. Visit the Fire Museum of Texas, take a boat ride on the Neches River, or visit one of the city parks for more kid-friendly activities in this area.
Lake Athens
This is a lake that spans 1,500 acres. Fishermen from around Texas come to catch bass, catfish, crappie and redear sunfish. There are more than a few camping spots and there is a public marina for people who want to go on a boat ride. The lake also has several swimming areas, playgrounds and picnic areas. If your family is a diving family, this is the attraction you can't miss. The park was built by divers and offers 30 wrecks to explore like the Ray Price Greyhound bus, a Lockheed C-140 jet Star plane, a few cars and several motorcycles.
