You know that a healthy diet is important for good health, but it can do wonders in the fight against cancer. And while good foods can help to ward off cancer and reduce the risk of cancer, bad foods may actually cause the disease. The American Institute for Cancer Research says that as many as 40 percent of all cancer cases may be related to poor diet.

Healthy Foods Contain Cancer-Fighting Vitamins

Healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, are rich in antioxidants and vitamins. In particular, vitamin E and beta-carotene have been shown to help reduce the risk of lung cancer. Chemical substances called carotenoids are also found in many healthy foods and have a protective effect against cancer.

Healthy Diets Limit Fats and Alcohol

A number of types of cancers, like breast, bowel and prostate cancer, have been linked to diets high in fat. Red meats, processed meats, alcohol, fast food and high-fat dairy foods have all been shown to increase cancer risk. Conversely, a healthy diet that's low in fat, limits red meat and alcohol and is high in fruits and vegetables eliminates cancer fuel and boosts vitamins and antioxidants.

Healthy Diets Mean Healthy Weight

Sticking to a low-fat healthy diet will also help to ensure a healthy body weight, and the American Cancer Society says that's important to help reduce cancer risk. Obesity is related to a number of different types of cancer, including breast, kidney, endometrial, colorectal and prostate cancer.

So what is a healthy diet to help reduce the risk of cancer? The American Cancer Society recommends as many plant-based foods as possible, including at least five daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Plenty of whole grains, while limiting fat, red meat and alcohol, can also help prevent cancer. It's also important to get regular exercise to keep off unwanted pounds and help reduce cancer risk.
