Leading a healthy lifestyle is important for disease prevention, even if you are not overweight, so making healthy choices is good for both you and your spouse. However, it may seem difficult to talk to your spouse about losing weight. By understanding how to develop a healthier lifestyle together, you can help your spouse lose weight and add enriching activities to your lives.

Step 1

Be sensitive when discussing weight loss with your spouse; she may be embarrassed by her weight. Express concern about the health risks associated with being overweight. Health risks for overweight individuals include heart disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease, liver disease and certain types of cancer, the Weight-Control Information Network warns.

Step 2

Agree to join your spouse in lifestyle changes that can help her lose weight. Take a dance class, plant a family garden or join a yoga class together.

Step 3

Encourage your spouse to engage in physical activities with you. Ask him to go for walks in the evening; this can not only promote weight loss, but also improve your relationship by giving you and your spouse a chance to talk without distractions, such as the phone or the television.

Step 4

Start eating a healthier diet. Don't pressure your spouse to take diet pills or use fad diets; these can be both dangerous and ineffective for long-term weight loss, FamilyDoctor.org states. Find recipes for healthy, well-balanced dishes and offer to cook dinner for your spouse. Stock up on healthy snacks as an alternative to empty calorie foods that are high in fat, such as chips and candy.

Tips and Warnings

  • Prepare his favorite foods in a healthier way, so he doesn't feel he's giving up all the foods he enjoys. For example, broiling or baking meat and fish rather than frying it can reduce the amount of fat per serving.
