How to Detox the Body With Colon Cleansing

The colon, also called the large intestine, is the area where water and nutrients get absorbed into the body from food. Over the course of time and after years worth of sub-par eating habits, the colon can become backed up or "impacted" with fecal matter, undigested food, mucoid plaque and bacteria. Colon cleansing can be done to push this backed up material out and get the colon back to good working order.

Step 1

Cut out the bad foods. Foods that are hard to digest and are low in nutrients need to be eliminated from the diet. Examples of these include red meats, processed carbs, dairy products and commercial baked goods. Avoid foods that are deep fried, cooked in butter and covered with cheese and heavy sauces.

Step 2

Eat more fiber. Fiber is a very important part of cleansing because it helps push backed up waste material out of the colon. A lack of fiber can be a big reason why an impacted colon develops in the first place. The Mayo Clinic recommends that women get 21 to 25 g of fiber a day and men get 30 to 38 g a day. Foods that are high in fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. You can also drink fruit and vegetable juices, but make sure that they are fresh juices and they are organic. This means they were not combined with chemicals or pesticides.

Step 3

Drink your water. Eliminate beverages that are high in calories, caffeine and sugar from your diet. Examples of these are coffee, energy drinks, tea, soda and alcohol. Drink eight to 10 cups of water a day instead. Water helps flush toxins from your system, helps absorb fiber and it also aids in metabolism.

Step 4

Take herbal supplements. Dietary supplements can be used as laxatives, they can kill parasites and they can improve the overall function of the colon. Examples of these include uva ursi, aloe vera, fennel seed, licorice root and slippery elm bark.

Step 5

Get a colonic. If you want to cleanse your colon in a hurry, get a colonic irrigation procedure. This is done by a trained professional who inserts a speculum into your rectum. Warm, mineral-rich water is then flushed in to break up waste material. The water pressure is then reversed and the material gets evacuated from the body.
