Ice hockey rinks offer a variety of programs for those looking to get a skate in, even in the warm weather months. Rinks such as the Flyer's Skate Zones in Voorhees or Pensauken and the Igloo in Mount Laurel offer visitors everything from free skates to hockey leagues to party hosting services.
Leagues
Organized hockey leagues are one of the great benefits of playing at one of the local rinks around Marlton. The leagues are organized and maintained by staff at the rinks, and include varying age brackets as well as skill levels within those age brackets. Many prefer organized play, with teams and schedules--instead of just playing to win a pickup game, players are working to progress through the season to win the title.
Open Hockey
Open hockey at a rink is a great alternative if you're looking to play competitive hockey without the long-term commitment that comes with playing in a league. At open hockey sessions, players show at the posted hours for a choose-'em-up game and enjoy competing shift-to-shift.
Open Skates
Open skating is a session where the rink is not used for a hockey game, but instead is made available to the general public for an admission fee. Customers can bring their own skates or rent them for a fee. The rink provides guards who keep traffic moving in the same direction to ensure there are not head-on collisions. The guards are also on the ice to prevent "hot dogging" or any other activities that might be dangerous to others.
Lessons
At rinks such as the Flyer's Zones or the Igloo, lessons are also available if you are looking to improve your skating and hockey-playing abilities. During lessons, a trained expert will work with you to critique your technique and to help correct any flaws so that you are more prepared for your next open skate or league match.
Gear Shops
Patrons who need new skates or other gear will be happy to find that the Igloo, as well as both the Voorhees and Pensauken Flyer's Skate Zone locations, contain pro shops. In the shops, you can get the latest hockey gear, including helmets, gloves and skates, ensuring that you have access to the best possible gear within your price range.
Entertainment
Away from the ice, the rinks also offer food and entertainment. Snack zones offer food ranging from hot dogs to pretzels and nachos, as well as soft drinks, coffee and hot chocolate. The rinks also host parties for birthdays or other occasions; these usually include skating, skate rentals and use of a party room for pizza, drinks and a cake.
