The teenage years comprise a period of quick growth, both emotionally and physically. Within a span of several years, a boy becomes a young man. A teenage boy experiences many changes during this phase of life, many that affect his skin. Changing hormones may cause differences in skin texture and function. While caring for his preadolescent skin may not have required much time or effort, keeping a teenage boy's skin healthy and attractive may require some special care and certain products.
Acne Preparations
Many teen boys experience acne breakouts. Small pimples, blackheads and pustules often form along areas of the face, chest and upper back. Wearing a baseball hat can cause an increase of pimples along the hairline. Lotions and creams that help treat this condition may contain benzoyl peroxide, an ingredient that kills bacteria and reduces swelling. Other acne preparations for boys contain salicylic acid. This ingredient may help improve acne conditions by causing slight drying and peeling of the skin. Prescription s acne preparations also treat this skin condition in teenage boys.
Sunscreens
Although many teenage boys may scoff at the idea of protecting their skin from the damaging rays of the sun, this important skincare product helps prevent sunburn and serous skin cancers, such as melanoma. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends the use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or more. This type of sunscreen helps block ultraviolet rays. Taking the time to apply this skin care product can help protect the health of a teen boy's skin now and in the future.
Deodorants
Changing hormones during puberty cause the sweat glands to become more active and secrete different chemicals into the sweat, causing smells and odors. While regular bathing can decrease the scent of sweat, deodorants can cover up the odor with a different scent. This skin care product comes in a variety of forms, including sprays, creams, gels and roll-on applicators.
Fungal Treatments
Teenage boys may experience skin conditions caused by fungal infections. One common area for the growth of fungus includes the region of the groin and upper thighs. Often referred to as jock itch, this fungal infection occurs when sweat accumulates and provides an environment for the growth of multiplying fungi. Teen's feet may also experience this type of skin infection, leading to a condition known as athlete's foot. Proper drying and the use of anti-fungal creams or powders may help resolve this uncomfortable condition. A fungal infection that resists treatment or last longer than two weeks may require a visit to a doctor for a prescription strength anti-fungal treatment.
