When it comes to choosing an oil for cooking or consuming, olive oil is by far the superior, healthy choice. Because olive oil is a monounsaturated oil, one of its main benefits is the reduction of LDL, or low-density lipoprotein. LDL is considered the "bad" cholesterol to have, so anything that can reduce it, such as olive oil, is a good thing.

Extra Virgin

While many oils, including some olive oil, can be processed, thereby losing many of their minerals and healthful benefits, extra virgin olive oil is the least processed and healthy to consume. According to an article on olive oil by MayoClinic.com nutritionist, Katherine Zeratsky, extra virgin olive oil contains a strong antioxidant, polyphenol, that helps to increase heart health. HealingDaily.com states that the benefits of olive oil go beyond reducing LDL, and that it also increases HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, the "good" cholesterol. HealingDaily.com notes that consuming as little as 2 tbsp. of olive oil per day results in increased heart health.

Heart Health & More

Not only does olive oil promote a healthy heart, but according to an MSNBC article on olive oil by Karen Collins, R.D., it also reduces inflammation, protects blood vessels and fights cancer-causing materials. This is because the monounsaturated fat contained in olive oil is more stable than polyunsaturated fats and thereby produces less free radicals, which reduces the likelihood of cancer. It is noteworthy that olive oil is the leading ingredient in the well-known, heart-healthy Mediterranean diet.

Scientifically Proven

A study done by Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, concluded that because of the high phenolic acid content in extra virgin olive oil, its benefits are many. The study lists positive effects on blood lipoproteins, cellular and blood platelets, inflammation, oxidative damage, overall bone health and a reduction of antimicrobial activity. The study also mentions reductions in the advancement of arthritis, cardiovascular and neurological problems, and some cancers.
