Cellulite is really nothing more than fat that gets trapped in the connective tissue under the skin. It creates a lumpy appearance that is often referred to as "cottage cheese." The hips, butt and thighs are the main areas that can be victimized by this substance. Although it is not life-threatening, cellulite can cause issues with self-esteem and self-confidence. To get rid of it, there are several steps you can take.
Step 1
Perform cardiovascular exercise. Cardiovascular exercise burns a significant amount of calories, which can translate to fat loss. Because cellulite is made of fat, cardio exercise can be beneficial. Examples are running, stair stepping, swimming, biking, rowing, rope jumping and elliptical training. Do cardio exercise three or four times a week for 45 to 60 minutes.
Step 2
Build muscle tone. Building muscle offers several benefits when it comes to fighting cellulite. It can raise your metabolism, which can help you lose fat and it can also build your muscles, which can keep your skin taut. Examples of exercises that target the butt, thighs and hips include squats, lunges, hip extensions, leg presses and step-ups.
Step 3
Clean up your diet. Along with cardiovascular exercise, this can further increase your caloric deficit and help promote fat loss. Eliminate high-fat, high-calorie foods like fast food, fried foods, processed foods and commercial baked goods. Eat lean meats, low-fat dairy, fish, beans, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and whole grains instead.
Step 4
Exfoliate your skin. Right before you step into the shower, take a soft-bristled body brush and exfoliate your skin. This will remove dead skin cells and promote circulation underneath, to help fight cellulite. Start at the areas furthest from your heart and make upward strokes and circular motions.
Step 5
Get laser therapy done. This is a procedure where diode laser energy is combined with tissue massage to reduce cellulite under your skin. The treatments are done twice a week for several weeks and according to the Mayo Clinic, the results can last up to six months.
