Most yogurts, yogurt drinks and supplements contain active microrganism cultures such as Lactobacillus, which are influential in maintaining a healthy digestive tract. Active cultures, sometimes called probiotics or "good bacteria," can help to reduce the severity of diarrhea. The "good" bacterial cultures present in probiotic products helps to destroy the "bad" bacteria responsible for causing diarrhea, such as Clostridium difficile. According to the National Health Service in the U.K., the use of probiotic products can help prevent and treat occurrences of diarrhea.
Step 1
Eat a pot of yogurt everyday to help prevent diarrhea and to maintain a healthy digestive tract. Check the back of the yogurt pot to make sure that the yogurt contains probiotic bacteria strains. There are many different strains of good bacteria added to yogurt and most pots are labeled "probiotic" for your convenience.
Step 2
Drink probiotic drinks. Probiotic drinks are usually small in size, easily portable, do not require you to bring a spoon to eat them and are perfect for eating while "on the go." As with yogurt pots, make sure to check beforehand whether your drink is labeled "probiotic" before consuming.
Step 3
Take probiotic supplements. This is a good choice for individuals who do not enjoy the taste of yogurt. Probiotic supplements are useful when you have diarrhea and have lost your appetite or find it difficult to eat. Supplements also have a low sugar content, compared to yogurt drinks and pots.
