Claritin, also known by the generic name loratadine, is an antihistamine used to treat children with hay fever, allergies and hives. Histamine, a naturally occurring chemical found in the body, causes the symptoms commonly associated with allergies such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes and runny nose. Claritin works by reducing the amount of histamine in the body, thereby temporarily relieving allergy symptoms. Claritin is available as a liquid, chewable tab and an oral-disintegrating tablet. While considered safe for pediatric use, Claritin is not recommended for use by children younger than 2 years old.
Headache
Headache is one of the most common side effects of Claritin. According to Drugs.com, 12 percent of patients experience headaches while taking this medication. In addition, children may also complain of dizziness. While headaches and dizziness are common, they are typically mild and may decrease or resolve completely as the body becomes accustomed to the use of this drug. Rarely, migraine headaches have been associated with Claritin use.
Drowsiness
Children taking Claritin may experience drowsiness. Additional symptoms can include weakness, impaired concentration and lightheadedness. According to KidsHealth, children may have trouble focusing on schoolwork. In addition, children may have difficulty completing tasks requiring concentration, such as playing sports, riding a bike or mowing the lawn. Because of the potential for injury, children taking Claritin should be supervised while performing such tasks until it is clear how Claritin affects them.
Abdominal Upset
Abdominal upset is another commonly seen side effect of Claritin. Children may experience mild abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Abdominal upset is usually transient in nature and should resolve on its own as the body becomes accustomed to Claritin use. According to MedlinePlus, Claritin can be taken with or without food. Children experiencing abdominal upset while on Claritin may benefit from taking this drug with meals or after a snack.
Dry Mouth
According to Drugs.com, 3 percent of patients taking Claritin will experience dry mouth. Additional oral side effects can include sore throat and oral lesions. Children may have difficulty swallowing, refuse to eat or complain of sore throat or oral pain. To help relieve dry mouth, KidsHealth suggests frequent oral care. Older children may find relief by sucking on hard, sugar-free candy. Dry mouth can also cause an increase in cavities. Because of this, proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits are important for children taking Claritin on an ongoing basis.
