Bar Harbor, Maine is located on Mount Desert Island, which is the largest coastal island in Maine. It is also home to a large portion of Acadia National Forest. This scenic area, which is popular for its family camping, also contains a number of wooded and oceanfront campgrounds.
Oceanfront Camprounds
Many visitors to Bar Harbor, Maine are interested in spending time along the Atlantic Ocean. Oceanfront campgrounds, such as Mt. Desert Narrows, allow visitors the opportunity of staying on the coast. This campground is appropriate for both tent and RV campers, and both oceanfront and ocean view sites are available. Campers have access to the campground's heated swimming pool, horseshoe pit, volleyball and basketball courts, canoe and kayak rentals, and live entertainment. Mt. Desert Narrows is also close to hiking, biking and whale-watching.
Wooded Campgrounds
A variety of wooded campground options are available in and around Bar Harbor, Maine. One such campground is the Bar Harbor Campground, which has secluded campsites suitable for both tents and RVs. This campground boasts of beautiful views of the ocean and mountains, a heated swimming pool, children's playground, basketball, shuffleboard and game room. Bar Harbor Campground is also within walking distance of miniature golf, and only two miles from Acadia National Park.
Lakeside Camping
Along with the ocean, the Bar Harbor area is also home to scenic lakes and ponds, such as Patton Pond in Ellsworth, Maine. Lakeside campgrounds, such as Patton Pond, are also available in the area. Patton Pond has sites for tents and RVs, as well as cottages available to rent. Campers can swim, canoe and fish on the lake, participate in a games, such as horseshoes, volleyball and basketball. There is also a children's playground and complimentary hayrides.
Public Campgrounds
The Bar Harbor area is home to two campgrounds owned by the National Park Service. They are Blackwoods Campground, which is just south of Bar Harbor, and Seawall Campground, which is just south of Southwest Harbor. Both campgrounds are located within walking distance of the ocean, and can accommodate tents and RVs. Hook-ups are not available; however there are comfort stations, cold running water, a dump station, picnic tables, fire rings, and water faucets at both campgrounds.
Winter Camping
Some Bar Harbor area campgrounds allow for camping during the winter months. One such campground is Blackwoods Campground, which allows for primitive camping only during the winter months-December 1 through March 31. Campers must hike in from the campground's entrance, and no automobiles are allowed. Reservations are not necessary at Blackwoods campground during the winter months.
