It is believed that pomegranates originated in Iran. These leathery-skinned, bright-red, seeded fruits have been prized in Asian and Mediterranean regions since ancient times. Pomegranates are thought to possess health benefits due to their rich antioxidant content. Recent studies have investigated the effects of pomegranate juice consumption on diseases like arthritis, coronary artery disease and erectile dysfunction. Study results continue to shed light on the health benefits and drawbacks of pomegranates.

Allergy

As with any food, the potential exists for an individual to have an allergic response to pomegranate. If skin rash or hives, sneezing, watery eyes or difficulty breathing occur upon consuming pomegranate, see your doctor. However, conventional wisdom is that pomegranates are well-tolerated by most people.

Potential Adverse Reaction With Use of Statins

According to Pubmed.gov, pomegranate has been shown to interact with and adversely affect certain drugs called statins, often prescribed for lowering cholesterol. The study reveals that pomegranates and pomegranate juice can inhibit the breakdown of statin drugs, leading to adverse health effects. Grapefruits and grapefruit juice have also been shown to negatively impact the metabolism of statin drugs by a similar process. People taking statin medication should not eat or drink grapefruit or pomegranate products.

Possible Lowering of Blood Pressure

Research results reported on PubMed.gov on the effect of pomegranate juice on coronary artery disease indicate that pomegranate juice can lower systolic blood pressure in some patients. If you are taking medication for hypertension, it may be a good idea to check with your doctor before adding pomegranate juice to your diet.
