Numerous Indiana campgrounds with nearby access to the state's large lakes are within a short driving distance of Indianapolis. Private campgrounds provide a variety of services to campers and anglers not only within sight of downtown Indianapolis, but also within walking distance of the Motor Speedway. Farther away from the city, state recreation areas provide abundant fishing and boating, RV, trailer or tent-camping spots.
Near the City
Near Indianapolis are several lakeside retreats for RV and tent campers. At the 22-acre, 110-campsite Lake Haven Retreat there is a five-acre stocked lake under the state's catch and release program. At the 70-acre, 220-site Raceview Family Campground, campers have access to the Eagle Creek Reservoir and the nearby Eagle Creek Golf Course. The campground provides services for RVers and tent campers, including restrooms, showers, an RV dump station, food, firewood, ice and camp-site water.
At the Raceway
In close proximity to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the Wilcox Mobile Home Park on Georgetown Road directly across the street. Electrical hook-up sites are available for RV and tent campers along with restrooms and showers. The Lake Haven Retreat's small lake is just a few minutes away. Also bordering the speedway is the Fairgrounds RV Camping site with 170 camp sites and access to Lake Haven and Eagle Creek Reservoir.
South of Indianapolis
Southeast of Indianapolis is Brookville Lake with virtually unlimited fishing opportunities from the 5,260-acre body of water. Mounds and Quakertown State Recreation areas cover 16,445 acres around the lake with 388 electric campsites. There are nine boat launch ramps, fishing and ice fishing facilities, hiking trails, hunting areas and archery. To the southwest of Indianapolis is 1,400-acre Cagles Mill Lake near Cloverdale with Lieber State Recreation Area and nearby Cataract Falls. There are two boat launches and a fishing pier. The area provides nearly 200 campsites.
To the West
Cecil M. Harden Lake near Rockville west of Indianapolis provides anglers with five boat launches to fish the lake and up to 240 electric-equipped campsites--37 non-electric sites and 35 primitive sites. Ice fishing is available in the winter and there is a limited hunting season. The park has limited operating hours for day-use facilities.
To the North
Off Interstate 69 north of Indianapolis near Huntington is J. Edward Roush Lake with 25 campsites at the Kil-So-Quah Campground and 130 sites at the Roush Lake Fish and Wildlife Area. Anglers can launch boats from two ramps and do ice fishing in the winter. Fishing is also available from two piers at the lake. At the 3,210-acre Mississinewa Lake near Peru are four recreation areas catering to anglers. Nearby parks Miami, Frances Slocum, Pearson Mill and Red Bridge cover the 14,386-acre area; Red Bridge features a marina. There are 335 electric campsites. Also northeast of Indianapolis is Salamonie Lake covering 2,855 acres and more than 340 campsites at Lost Bridge West and East recreation areas and Dora-New Holland, Mount Etna and Mount Hope recreation areas.
