How to Treat TMJ Disorder
Overview
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ) causes pain and makes it difficult to use your jaw. It can hinder your ability to talk, eat and in some cases breathe as it affects the muscles that control the jaw. In some cases, the pain is temporary and you will not need treatment. In other cases, the symptoms are severe enough that you need medical help. There are different treatment options available for you to discuss with your doctor.
Step 1
Use self care techniques. According to the National Institutes of Health, when your TMJ flares up, try eating soft foods and avoid excessive jaw use such as chewing gum. Ice packs or moist heat applied to the jaw may help to reduce inflammation and pain. Talk to your doctor, dentist or a physical therapist about doing some gentle stretching exercises to help your jaw muscles relax. Learning to manage your stress levels will also help as stress can cause tension in the jaw.
Step 2
Try some over the counter or prescription medications to help control your symptoms. Anti-inflammatory, pain and muscle relaxant medications may provide relief when your symptoms are worse. Your doctor can recommend what medications are best for your condition and other medications you may already be taking.
Step 3
Get fitted for a mouth guard that can stop you from grinding your teeth. The National Institutes of Health states that mouth guards only work in some cases and they should be avoided if they change your bite. Your dentist may be able to make some changes to the way you bite that will help to reduce jaw tension.
Step 4
Consider surgery only as a last resort. The TMJ Association states that surgery should not be considered except for severe cases because the replacement may not relieve pain, can cause permanent damage and may break.
