Omeprazole is the generic name for Prilosec, a drug commonly prescribed for acid reflux or GERD in babies. According to BabyCareAdvice.com, omeprazole works by decreasing the amount of acid that is present in the stomach. Omeprazole is only available through a prescription. Parents should discuss possible side effects of this medication with the baby's pediatrician before administering.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a common side effect of omeprazole in an infant. The drug should be given about an hour before breakfast, which can help reduce this problem, according to KidsHealth.org. A baby with diarrhea should be given plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, and parents should contact her doctor if it persists. Gas, nausea or vomiting can accompany the diarrhea; smaller meals and washing the mouth out often can help alleviate these symptoms.

Ear Infections

According to BabyMedicalQuestionsandAnswers.com, an ear infection, also called otitis media, is a side effect of omeprazole that can occur in babies. Symptoms include pain in the ear and a fever; it is sometimes treated with an antibiotic. Pain that lasts for 3 days warrants a call to the pediatrician. If ear infections recur while taking omeprazole, a baby's doctor may try a different course of treatment. Acute otitis media can often lead to other health concerns such as a burst eardrum or an upper respiratory tract infection.

Allergic Reaction

Omeprazole has the potential to cause an allergic reaction in a baby. KidsHealth.org recommends watching for symptoms that include wheezing, itching, fever, cough, swelling, rash or unusual behavior. If any of these symptoms present after a baby takes omeprazole, he should be taken to the emergency room right away for treatment, as an allergic reaction to a medication can be life threatening. In these cases, parents and pediatricians should consider different treatment options.
