Sickness, pain and many health problems are often caused when Chi (pronounced chee) energy is blocked, according to ancient Chinese philosophy. Qigong exercises concentrate on breathing and flowing movement. Qigong exercises are supposed to increase the flow of Chi through your body.
Autumn Breeze
Autumn Breeze is one of the most basic qigong exercises that promotes freedom of movement in the back. Start with your knees slightly bent and your arms at your sides. Raise your arms to waist level and twist your body to your left. With your arms bent at a 45-degree angle, slowly turn from left to right and then reverse the movement from right to left. Do this for three to five minutes, concentrating on making slow and graceful movements. This is best done outside in sunshine or in a well-lit room.
Cloud Hands
Bend your knees slightly and raise your arms to chest level. Bend your right arm so that your forearm is in front of your ribcage and your left arm is in front of your body at neck height. As you twist from left to right and then back from right to left, switch positions with your right and left arms. Do this for three to five minutes. This is best done outside in sunshine or in a well-lit room.
Turning Like a Windmill
In this exercise, your body mimics a windmill in an attempt to loosen your back muscles. Stand with your knees slightly bent and your hands over your head. Your elbows should be slightly bent. Lower your hands in a circular motion. When your hands get to waist level, bend at the waist as you lower your hands toward your feet. Continue the circle until your hands have returned to a position above your head. Do this for three to five minutes. This is best done outside or in a well-lit room.
