Anxiety has a good side and a bad side. It can be used as a motivator in times of conflict or before sporting events, which can help keep you out of danger and improve your performance. But when your anxiety gets too high, it can cause a negative impact that can interrupt your work life, social life and home life. Anxiety can be treated with several approaches.
Medications
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain that helps you feel calm and relaxed. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are prescription antidepressants that can be used to treat anxiety and help you feel more at ease. Examples of these are sertraline, paroxetine, citalopram and fluoxetine.
Tricyclics are another type of antidepressant medication that is started in low doses and increased progressively. Examples of these include clomipramine and imipramine.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are the oldest type of antidepressants. Examples of these include isocarboxazid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine.
Short-term Drugs
Benzodiazepines are anti-anxiety drugs that are used for a short period because they have a tendency to cause a dependency. Examples of these include diazepam, alprazolam, clonazepam and lorazepam. If you are prescribed these drugs, take caution; they can cause side effects such as reduced muscle coordination and drowsiness.
Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that involves changing your thought process in terms of anxiety. Instead of thinking about a negative outcome or behavior that can arise, you put your attention on positive outcomes and behaviors instead.
Exercise
Exercise offers the body many benefits. It can help decrease your weight, can build muscle, reduce risk factors for diseases and can improve circulation. In terms of anxiety, it can help reduce stress, improve your mood and keep your mind off things that are making you anxious. Exercise on most days of the week for at least 30 minutes and do something that you like. Examples are running, biking, swimming, elliptical training, rowing, playing sports and walking.
Habits
Using alcohol can exacerbate anxiety, and it should be avoided. Caffeine is a stimulant that should be avoided, because it can cause nervousness and irritability. Examples of caffeinated products are coffee, tea, soda and energy drinks.
Relaxation
Relaxation techniques can help calm you and keep your stress levels under control. Partake in some form of relaxation activity such as yoga, meditative breathing, guided imagery or tai-chi. Also, make sure to get enough sleep; this can keep you more relaxed during the day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that adults get seven to nine hours of sleep a night.
