Fexotabs is the trade name for the medication fexofenadine. Fexotabs is indicated for the treatment of seasonal allergies and itchy rashes known as hives. In seasonal allergies, Fexotabs help reduce sneezing, runny and itchy nasal congestion, and itchy, watery and red eyes. Fexofenadine is part of a newer generation of antihistamines, resulting in far less sedation and motor impairment. Fexofenadine was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1988 and has been studied extensively in clinical trials and post marketing research. Fexotabs can cause several side effects depending on dose, condition and age.
Side Effects for Adults With Allergies
Patients 12 and older may experience certain types of side effects when taking Fexotabs for allergies. According to Drugs.com, the most common side effect for this age group and condition is a headache, occurring in around 10 percent of patients. The second most common reported side effect is back pain, occurring in 2.5 percent of patients. These side effects manifested in patients taking 180 mg once daily, which is the largest dosage available. In addition, around 1.5 percent of women taking 60 mg twice daily experienced irregular menstrual cycles.
Side Effects for Children With Allergies
Children 6 to 11 years old have also experienced several age related side effects from taking Fexotabs for allergies. According to Drugs.com, the most common side effect for this age group was a cough, occurring in 3.8 percent of patients. Another 2.9 percent of children taking fexofenadine have experienced upper respiratory tract infections. In addition, 2.4 percent of children 6 to 11 years old taking fexofenadine have experienced middle ear inflammation and excessive sweating.
Side Effects for Younger Children With Allergies
Children 6 months to 5 years of age have also experienced a specific set of side effects. According to Drugs.com, the most common side effect was vomiting, occurring in 12 percent of children taking 15 mg twice daily. Children taking 30 mg twice daily experienced a lower rate of vomiting, at around 4 percent. Diarrhea is the second most common side effect ranging from 2.8 percent to 3.7 percent in patients, depending on the dose. Drowsiness and fatigue also occurs in this age group, ranging from 0.9 to 2.8 percent, depending on the dose. Runny nose also occurs in the this age group, with a range of 0.9 to 2.1 percent of patients.
Side Effects for Adults With Hives
Patients 12 years and older taking Fexotabs for hives have also experienced a specific set of side effects. Drugs.com states that the most common side effect is headache, occurring in 4.8 percent of patients. Other reported side effects include dizziness, back pain, stomach discomfort and pain in the hands and feet, all occurring in around 2.1 percent of patients. According to eMedTV, patients who experience back pain from fexofenadine can help alleviate the symptoms by using hot and cold packs and by taking anti-inflammatory medications and pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
