Laughlin, Nevada is located just across the Arizona border and is known for the Big Bend Water District and its plentiful outdoor recreation and sport opportunities. Because of its relative proximity to Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River and Bullhead City, Arizona, as well as a thriving casino scene, Laughlin attracts a large camping and RV crowd.
Public Campgrounds
The Big Bend State Recreation Area is one of Laughlin's top attractions and a good spot for camping. Although there are few full electric and water hookups, park amenities include restroom and shower facilities, as well as extensive hiking and biking trails. Lake Mead National Recreation Area has an extensive camping network consisting of nine primitive and developed campgrounds. You can also camp at Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada's oldest and largest state park, which offers basic facilities such as restroom and showers.
Private Campgrounds
Privately owned and operated campgrounds tend to offer more services than their public counterparts and offer more kid-friendly activities and amenities. The Riverside RV Park in Bullhead City is technically in Arizona but is just a few minutes from Laughlin. The RV park offers amenities such as swimming pool and clubhouse with games and activities. The Laughlin KOA is open year-round and features a pool, tours and excursions and complimentary Wi-Fi. Davis Camp, also located across the border in Arizona, is a good spot for those who want to "rough" it because it offers primitive as well as developed camp sites.
Weather Considerations
Fall and spring offer more comfortable temperatures and, often, fewer crowds. Because summer temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F, you'll want to limit your outdoor activities to the early morning and late evening hours, drink plenty of water and slather on the sunscreen; the last thing you want to do is succumb to sun poisoning, dehydration or sunstroke. If you plan to camp in winter, bring plenty of extra blankets and warm clothing.
Reservations
Make your reservations at least a few months in advance if you plan to stay at a private campground and arrive early at public campgrounds in order to improve your chances of obtaining a campsite. Even if you have your heart set on staying at a public campground, you'll want to have a backup plan in case there's no camping availability. This is especially true between Memorial and Labor Day.
Activities and Attractions
If you're interested in participating in water sports, head to Lake Mead National Recreation Area or the Big Bend State Recreation Area. Mountain climbers can go to the Black Mountains or Spirit Mountain. You'll have a wide choice of hiking trails through the intriguing landscape at Valley of Fire State Park. Grapevine Canyon and the Grand Canyon offer rappelling and hiking opportunities, while the Colorado River beckons whitewater rafters and kayakers. If you just want to spend the day sunbathing and swimming, drive over to Willow Beach Harbor.
