How to Heal a Headache

The pain of a headache can make basic everyday duties a struggle, or be so severe that you can't get out of bed. There are several different types of headaches, like migraines, cluster headaches and tension headaches--which the U.S. National Library of Medicine says are some of the most common. Headache symptoms can range from mild to very severe, and many be accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and other symptoms.
Headaches can be caused by stress, foods, lack of sleep and tight muscles in the head and neck, says the NLM. Prevention is the best medicine, but there are a number of things you can do to ease headache pain when it strikes.

What You Can Do

Step 1

Take over-the-counter headache medications. If you have frequent headaches and your doctor has written you a prescription, follow those instructions as ordered. Otherwise, try an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen, aspirin (never for children), naproxen or ibuprofen. You may want to try a special pain medication just for headaches.

Step 2

Try to relax. Stress and tension are major headache triggers, so to ease headache pain, give yourself a relaxing break. Step away from work, bills, kids and any other stresses for a bit, and allow yourself some relaxation time. Try some deep breathing techniques, visualize a peaceful place, go for a walk to get some exercise, or do some yoga.

Step 3

Lie down and rest. Sometimes the best remedy for a headache is a nice rest. Lie down in a comfortable place, and make sure the room is cool, quiet and dark. Place a pillow beneath your head and neck for support, and rest until the pounding in your head subsides.

Step 4

Heat things up. Soaking in a hot bubble bath or a hot shower can help you relax, and the heat can help alleviate headache pain. If cold therapy works better for your pain, try holding an ice pack or a cold cloth on your neck or forehead. Also try giving yourself a gentle massage on your shoulders, neck and the base of your head.

Step 5

Try preventing headaches. Do your best to relax and shake off stress each day--it will do wonders for preventing headaches. Sticking with a healthy diet and getting regular exercise will also help ward off painful headaches. You should also be sure to get plenty of good sleep every night.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try keeping a headache diary of symptoms and triggers if you experience frequent headaches, and talk to your doctor about them.
