What To Look For
Before children start walking, socks are generally the best option for keeping their feet warm. "Babies' feet just aren't built for shoes," says Joanne Cox, M.D., associate chief of general pediatrics at Children's Hospital in Boston. Their feet have little bones, muscles, and tendons that need to grow and benefit from exercise, she says, and that can be difficult if they're constantly scrunched in a pair of shoes. Once your baby turns into a toddler and starts walking, it is nice to protect their feet with shoes. Look for a lightweight shoe that isn't difficult for your toddler to lift. The shoe should have a rubber or leather sole to help with traction. Canvas or leather uppers will mold to your child's foot best. Your toddler's shoes should fit well. Go to a shoe store that specializes in children's shoes, Cox says, and make sure your toddler's foot is measured for length and width. Toddlers' feet are wide when they are young--to help them stabilize while walking--so make sure the shoe itself isn't restricting this natural feature.
Common Pitfalls
One of the most common mistakes parents make when buying their toddler shoes is to purchase used shoes. While they may be a good deal, shoes mold to the foot of their wearer, and you don't want to put your tot in shoes molded to someone else's foot. This will make walking even more difficult than it already is. Avoid purchasing open-toed shoes or sandals for your new walker. A toddler can easily trip on these types of shoes, and they can get caught more easily on toys or even a stick in the yard. Don't forget to put the type of socks your child will wear on her when you go to try on her shoes.
Where To Buy
Shoes for toddlers can be purchased online at specialty stores, at discount stores, department stores and shoe stores. If you have measured your child's feet precisely, you may have luck purchasing online. However, if you are unsure, take your child to a shoe store to have her fitted.
