A swim cap isn't meant to keep hair dry or preserve styling, but it can prevent long hair, especially, from becoming a nuisance while you swim. A simple, inexpensive swim cap can keep your hair from drifting in the water, getting in your face as you swim and weighing heavily on your neck every time you stop for a break. Putting on a swim cap with long hair can be somewhat tricky, but the process can be both simple and quick when you apply the proper technique.

Step 1

Pull your hair back to let it hang loosely behind you.

Step 2

Hold the swim cap open in front of you, and grip opposite edges in each hand. Alternatively, you can place both hands into the swim cap and spread it open from the inside.

Step 3

Push your head into the swim cap opening so that the front edge nestles snugly against your forehead.

Step 4

Stretch the swim cap back over your head, and tug the sides down to create a secure fit on the top of your head.

Step 5

Twist or lift your long hair up, and tuck it into the back of the swim cap.

Step 6

Tug the back of the swim cap down to settle it securely around your hair and against your skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Silicone swim caps may cost more than caps made of latex, but they tend to last longer and snag and pull hair less--a big advantage for swimmers with long hair. Consider wearing a thin wig cap liner under your swim cap to keep your hair tucked away neatly while you swim. Sprinkle corn starch inside your swim cap to keep it from sticking and snagging.
  • Although some sites recommend placing your hair in a ponytail or bun before swimming, these styles can create a bulge or peak in your swim cap, which may interfere with the cap's watertight seal.
