Prevention of Varicose Veins

Ever wonder what those thick, raised and tangled veins are that pop up in your legs? They're varicose veins, which are normal veins that become swollen and knotted, says the Mayo Clinic. These swollen veins can pop up anywhere on your body, but most often strike the legs and feet. Varicose veins are caused by too much time on your feet, which results in increasing pressure in the veins in your legs.
Varicose veins are unattractive, but they can also be quite painful. According to the Mayo Clinic, varicose veins may also indicate other problems with circulation that should be addressed and treated. Rather than dealing with painful, swollen veins when they occur, it's best to try to prevent varicose veins from forming. Though you can't always stop them from forming, you can reduce your risk.

Step 1

Get exercise. Exercise helps to improve circulation and therefore blood flow throughout your body. The more blood is flowing, the less likely blood will build up in the veins in the legs and increase pressure. Regular exercises, like running or walking, can also make your legs and the veins inside stronger.

Step 2

Make changes to your diet. A healthy diet can ward off a number of health problems, including varicose veins. Try to avoid salt and bulk up on fiber, as both of those can play a role in blood pressure. Fiber can help to prevent constipation, which can increase the risk of varicose veins. Skipping salt will help prevent swelling in the body. It's also important to avoid gaining too much weight, as that only adds to the pressure in your legs.

Step 3

Give your legs a break. When your legs are squeezed into tight pantyhose and high heels, pressure is building up inside. Skip fashion in favor of comfort and healthier legs, and give them some room to breathe. Try wearing support stockings made with elastic to offer strength and support to your legs. Also sit down with your feet propped up as often as you can.

Step 4

Keep moving around. Standing for too long or sitting without adjusting your position can increase pressure and the likelihood of varicose veins. Whether you're on your feet or sitting at a desk, make sure you change your position and move around frequently.
