While people remain just as busy, if not busier than ever, they are becoming more health conscious and are unwilling to settle for the unhealthy fast food options that were traditionally available. Many of the biggest fast food chains are offering menu options to those that are concerned about their diet, and a surprising number of low carbohydrate options are available at fast food restaurants.

Salads

Salads are available at many types of restaurants, perhaps most popular at Subway and McDonald's. Options at either restaurant for less than 10 g of carbohydrates, include the Caesar salad at McDonald's and the Veggie Delite salad at Subway. Keep in mind that adding chicken and dressings easily increase the carbohydrate count.

Sides

Many meal options at fast food restaurants come with French fries, onion rings or potato chips, and substituting a healthier option for these is an easy way to cut carbs. Burger King offers Fresh Apple Fries, Wendy's offers a Mandarin orange cup and McDonald's offers Apple Dippers as an alternative to the deep-fried sides that normally accompany standard fast food entrees.

Avoid Buns

An easy way to see your carbohydrate count increase is by eating the buns or tortilla that surround your normal burger or burrito. Most burger chains, such as McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King, will allow you to order any burger without the bun. At a burrito place such as Chipotle, you can opt for a burrito bowl that comes without the tortilla. Chicken tenders or nuggets are also carbohydrate-friendly options that do not have a bun to begin with.
