Information About Rose Essential Oil

The essential oil of rose is used as a perfume and in aromatherapy. As with other flowers, the essential oil is the oil extracted from a single species and typically extracted via steam distillation.

Flowers Needed to Produce Essential Oil

According to Columbia University, to produce 1 oz. of essential rose oil, a total of 1,000 lbs. of rose flowers are needed.

Steam Distillation

To produce rose essential oil, steam is forced through rose plant material, vaporizing the oil. The oil is collected by condensation.

Feel

Rose essential oil is called an oil but does not have a greasy feel to it. It is called an oil because the substance is soluble in oil.

Plant Use

Roses use their essential oil in a variety of ways, including attracting or repelling insects, humidity control and infection control.

Rose Water

The steam that is used to drive the essential oil from the rose plant is also condensed and contains some of the scent of the essential rose oil. This is made into rose water products.
