The urinary tract consists of the bladder, urethra, ureters and kidneys. A urinary tract infection can occur in one part, or all, of the system. According to the Mayo Clinic, most UTIs occur in the lower part of the urinary tract, which is the urethra and bladder. The symptoms of a UTI will depend upon which part of the tract is infected.

Symptoms of UTI in Kidneys

An infection in the kidney can have serious consequences, so it is important to take note of the possible symptoms. One of the first things you will notice is the urge to urinate often. Immediately after urination, you may feel the need to go again. These symptoms tend to occur more often at night. You may also feel pain along the back in the area of the kidneys, which is right near the rear of the waist. Other symptoms of UTI in the kidneys, as listed by the University of Maryland Medical Center, include fever and cold chills that can last for a few days, nausea, and possible vomiting.

Symptoms of UTI in Bladder

A urinary tract infection in the bladder can cause several symptoms. As with the UTI in the kidneys, one of the first symptoms you may experience is the need to urinate often. The process of urination can also be quite painful. Even if you do not have to urinate, you may feel continual pressure in the pelvic region, which makes you feel as if you do. The Mayo Clinic states that this can cause discomfort in the lower abdominal region, and the infection can also cause a fever. If the UTI in the bladder is not treated, it can spread to the kidneys.

Symptoms of UTI in Urethra

A UTI in the urethra is sometimes referred to as urethritis, although urethritis can also be caused by other factors. When the UTI is in the urethra, the symptoms are confined to that one area. Along with the frequent and painful urination, the National Institutes of Health reports that there can also be blood in the urine. In men, there may be blood in the semen, and pain when ejaculating. Men may also experience itching, soreness, and swelling in the genital area. For women, there may be abdominal pain and vaginal discharge. Both men and women may experience a low grade fever. If you experience any of these symptoms, see your doctor, as a UTI that is left untreated can spread further into the urinary tract, and the bacteria could ultimately end up in the blood stream, which can lead to serious health issues.
